industry-standard examples of production, maintenance, and change management apply to every aspect of operating system design. this text employs an explicit design methodology that highlights the evolution of the os from an infancy in which modules performed simple tasks to an evolved adolescence in which the user executes a vast number of sophisticated programs.
if you have a small collection of applications that use the linux kernel, you will find this book helpful because it provides a framework for building your own kernel applications. it’s also a good reference because most of the subjects covered are common topics encountered in linux system administration, networking, and security classes.
this book is intended to be a reference for graduate students of computer science and a text for the interested layperson. it should be noted that the book does not attempt to cover the os architecture in any great detail （the underlying principles of os architecture are covered）. therefore, it is not intended to teach any aspect of os design or implementation in any way. it is mainly an exploration of different ways to look at os design, in the form of exercises. it is particularly useful for people who are already familiar with the os development process and wish to learn about its own design concepts.
i first heard about gary nutt at the interactive systems symposium ten years ago. the presentations he gives at this and other conferences have always been of the highest quality and most stimulating. his work is an important contribution to the understanding of the os aspects of programming. he is also very active and easy to work with in his consulting and the programming of kernel modules for linux.
operating systems, and in particular the linux kernel, are central to computer science and its applications. as many of you know, i am a professor at the university of colorado, boulder. i teach a course and have been since 1992 called operating systems, computer systems, and parallel applications. i have used this course to teach thousands of students over the years and i have gone over in lecture notes and in the course book all of the material in this book. students find this text to be of great help, especially during the first year of the course.
