I’ll admit, I never thought much of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. I rolled up a party of four amateur adventurers, brought them through Ravenloft’s Labyrinth, and got blasted out for wandering too close to the gate into Barovia. Then I brought them back through again, and visited all the way through Barovia and Ak’Abban. Only then did the Van Richten Guide hit the books.
The Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft is a Dungeons & Dragons book I pulled off the shelf for one of the campaigns. It included a set of character sheets and a little bit of background on how to use the Ravenloft setting. As such, it contained a huge amount of information for an individual set of adventures to use, but what really got me excited was the clever way in which it was all presented. There weren’t any given plans, just lots of little details and tips. Clearly, this was not the book to use for a party that was aiming for a quick pick-up and play experience.
It immediately got me thinking, what if I made my own character sheet for all of my adventures in Ravenloft? What kind of advantages might I gain from doing that? Well, not much, I would imagine. But that didn’t keep me from thinking about it. Yet even if I was to come up with the same idea, I seriously doubt that I could give the kind of level of detail that Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft supplied. Let’s look into how it was put together and why it may provide a strong foundation for a character sheet.
Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft doesn’t talk a lot about the characters, but it seems pretty obvious that this isn’t some kind of legacy campaign that actually allows the reader to create their own character sheets for Van Richten’s characters. In fact, it could be considered more of a set of tips for the players then a full campaign setting. The players are part of Van Richten’s group, and have different roles to play as the characters come face to face with the specters and shadow-travelers. It is these characters that are the focus. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Van Richten’s guide doesn’t go into more than the most standard details about
